Happy Thanksgiving to All in the Mid-Atlantic Builders Community

Thanksgiving is a holiday with a special focus on family and loved ones, true, but it is also a time to recognize the good that surrounds each of us. As the past few years have been particularly difficult for our entire country, for this year I think we should each take an extra moment to acknowledge how fortunate we really are.

Something I am thankful for this Thanksgiving are the dedicated employees, contractors and suppliers of Mid-Atlantic Builders. Because of these men and women, we are able to provide our customers more than a just a house. We enable each family who buys a Mid-Atlantic home to have a special place to celebrate together. This time of year means a holiday meal, presents and holiday decorations and staying warm by the fire. Our company is happy to play a part in creating a place for those moments.

Without each team member’s contribution, our company’s vision would be impossible to achieve and our customer’s dreams would never become a reality.

So this year, when I enjoy my holiday meal in the company of  friends and family, I will be thinking of all those in the Mid-Atlantic Builders community. Happy Thanksgiving and may the coming year be a bountiful one for all.

Mid-Atlantic Builders Helps the Homeless

For over 10 years Mid-Atlantic Builders has been an ardent supporter of Fannie Mae’s annual Help the Homeless Walk. This year I found myself particularly humbled by the event.

Saturday’s walkathon on the National Mall attracted more than 15,000 walkers according to RealEstateRama.com and raised more than $80 million. Several from Mid-Atlantic were in attendance to offer their support for the worthy cause.

According to Fannie Mae, nearly 660,000 people nationwide call the streets their home. Here in Washington, DC that number is nearly 20,000.

This year’s walkathon was sponsored by 118 organizations and attracted powerful support from Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes and actor Jermaine Crawford of HBO’s The Wire.

Michael J. William, president and CEO of Fannie Mae, was also on hand to add his remarks.

“Every person walking today is sending a message. We are saying that we have neighbors in need, we care about them and we want to do something to help.”

As a homebuilder, I understand the value of having a safe environment to come home to at night. Naturally, Mid-Atlantic Builders cares about building quality homes for its customers, but housing those less fortunate is of equal concern.

If you would like to learn how you can help combat homelessness or want to take part in next year’s Help the Homeless Walk visit Fannie Mae’s website.

Dressing your home for the holidays

Your home’s holiday décor doesn’t have to end with Christmas lights outside or a wreath on your front door. Let me show you a few ways you can use natural embellishments to uplift your guests and family this season.

Bathrooms, side tables and coffee tables are perfect canvasses for simple decorative potpourri vases. Start by getting some clear glass vases and filling them up with potpourri or fall leaves from your own backyard. Picking a variety of colors will make for more decorative pieces and surely draw compliments from guests at your dinner table. Making table pieces is cheap, fun and also a great art project for young children.

For the kitchen and dining room, use fruits, gourds, squashes and pumpkins in your centerpieces. The natural earth tones will brighten your home, a welcome relief to the sometimes drab days of winter. Plus, your guests will feel very special if you offer them to a fruit from your centerpiece.

Colorful candles are another easy ornament for holiday decorations. Fireplace mantles, staircase steps and under decorative mirrors are ideal places for these warm decorations. Feel free to use the same candles for different occasions by simply rearranging them in groups or by wrapping different garlands around them. Decorator’s Tip: using the same garlands throughout your home will carry your holiday cheer.

If you can, using a different bedspread with muted shades of orange, gold and red may keep you a little warmer, even on those snowy evenings.

Veterans Call Mid-Atlantic Builders Home

Photo From Flickr: merriewells

Today is Veterans Day and I would like to take a moment to thank the active and retired servicemen and women of our armed forces. It is because of their brave work that we can enjoy safety, peace of mind and freedom at home.

Many servicemen and women live in and around the Washington area. With Andrews Air force Base, the Naval Academy and Fort Mead located near several of our communities, it is no surprise that many members of the armed forces have decided to live in a home built by Mid-Atlantic Builders.

I am always happy to see our young men and women return safely, but I am even more honored that they end their day in a Mid-Atlantic home.

New Homesites Released with Homes Starting in the Upper $400s

No one likes to be told luxury comes with a big price tag, so I won’t go there. But hearing about a good deal can just about make anyone’s day. Let me tell you about a limited-time opportunity Mid-Atlantic Builders is offering for our newly priced resort-style homes.

Just this week we released a group of ten new homesites in the South Village Section at Beechtree. Find your private get-away on a wooded cul-de-sac or along the pristine 35-acre Lake Presidential. Or maybe you’d prefer one of the limited homesites that back up to the award-winning Lake Presidential Golf Course, voted the number two golf course in Maryland by GolfWeek. The question is, do you prefer peaceful waterfront views or do you want to work on your putting?

We aren’t just excited about our newly released home sites, though, we also have a special offer on the Oxford model. A spacious 3,358-square-feet, the Oxford comes standard with three and a half baths, a spacious two-story foyer room enough for a set-back staircase as well as a secluded Owner’s Suite, accented by cathedral ceilings and its own private sitting room. The Oxford model starts in the high $400s, which also includes our current promotion for a free finished Rec Room, Insulated Spray Foam Package and a contribution of $10,000 towards closing costs.

Mid-Atlantic Builders Recognized as Community Developer of the Year

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the associate and subcontractor members of the Maryland National Capital Building Association (MNCBIA) for their decision to select Mid-Atlantic Builders as the 2010 Community Developer of the Year.

This year’s selection was announced last Thursday, October 28, 2010, at an industry-wide gala held at the Greenbelt Marriott. The association based its decision on each candidate’s attentiveness to scheduling, supervision, engineering, quality control and ethics. Roger Lebbin, President of Mid-Atlantic Builders, was on hand to accept the award. “It is always special to be recognized for the work you do, but to receive that honor from your colleagues and friends is particularly meaningful.”

Mid-Atlantic Builders has been honored eight times as MNCBIA Builder of the Year and was the National Association of Homebuilders and Builder Magazine’s 2006 pick for America’s Best Builder. This is the first time Mid-Atlantic Builders has been recognized as Community Developer of the Year.

Finding Your Inner Interior Designer

Daybreak or Sky High for the bedroom? Red Obsession or Blue Cruise for the study? Choosing a color can cause quite a headache. Don’t let it.

You shouldn’t have to settle for the beiges and whites just because you find yourself bogged down by that seemingly endless color wheel. There are a few ways to ensure your color palate stays satisfied years after laying the first coat.

Choosing a timeless base color such as a tinted white, warm gray, tan or various shades of brown will allow you to build layers of color—from accent walls to rugs, furniture to drapes, keeping colors simple at first enables you to get creative later.

Don’t feel pressure to decide, design and decorate all in one sitting. Start slowly, choosing one room at a time and allow new colors to stew. If you like the results, continue through other areas of the home. This will help you avoid design fatigue and allow you to budget better.

Take colors from your home’s central room, like the kitchen or family room, and use it in other areas of the home to ensure continuity.

Tans are good overall colors to use if you want to create a warm and cozy environment. Taupe shades with gray undertones are very popular and work well with warm colors like red tones or cold colors such as grays, blues and purples. Look at your furnishing and even your own closet to find colors you’re naturally drawn to.

The HGTV website has a great website with lots of ideas and quizzes to help you find your color.

Pottery Barn also publishes some great customer friendly books on design concepts. I find myself flipping through them whenever I need inspiration. Check them out here or stop by your local bookstore.
